You are bidding on a RARE 1986 Fender Stratocaster MIJ. Serial #E651916. Model unknown (see notes below)
This guitar Looks and Sounds GREAT! I really hate sell it, but I must.
I am the original owner and I've tried to take good care of it in the 24 years that I have owned it. It does have a chip on the bottom corner and some minor scratches. The neck plate and fine tuners on the brige show some corrosion. This guitar has been setup several times over the years. It has had 2 fret jobs. There is some minor wear of the frets, but nothing that interferes with the great tone of this instrument.
This is a great sounding guitar. It was one of the early, extremely well-made guitars, made in Japan for export to the US. I am uncertain exactly which model it is. It appears to have the specs of what the wiki page for 'Fender Contemporary Stratocaster' call the 'Unkown Model': Here are the features of my guitar as described on the wiki page:
- āDā profile neck with a 12" radius.
- "BiFlex" truss rod adjustment at the top of the neck.
- Microtilt neck angle fine adjustment.
- 22 medium jumbo frets.
- Fender Roto-matic tuners, and 4 bolt neck plate.
- 11 screw pickguard.
- String locking.
- Rare stock 'System 3 Bridge' [tremolo bar is not included, lost many years ago]
- 2
single coil and 1 humbucking pickups - 5 position selector switch, 1
volume, 1 TBX - 25.5" scale length
- Rosewood fingerboard
- Black colored neck (back), body, and headstock <-- this is how it came from the factory
- Side mounted output jack
Special note about this model
This is not a standard model (as described in the user's manual). I have been uncertain of the model since I purchased it. I recently found this description of a 'rare 3rd version' that looks exactly like this guitar. On this model the tremolo is referred to as the 'System 3 Bridge' tremolo.
Here is the description lifted from the site StratCentral (http://www.strat-central.com/japan.htm):
Type: Contemporary Stratocaster (third version)
Remarks: These guitars were made from 1985
to 1987. They distinguish themselves from other Contemporary
Stratocaster models by dint of the presence of a pickguard and,
in this case, the HSS pickup layout.
Comment by Strat Central
visitor David Lewis: The Bridge on this guitar is a stock bridge from
the factory. Made for Fender by Kahler. It is referred to as a "system 3
bridge". These are fast becoming rare because many owners lose the
vibrato bar. The bar is a key element to this bridge as it serves three
functions. Underneath the metal tip or cap is an "allen key" for
adjusting the locking mechanism for the strings. The correct locking
mechanism for this guitar, when equipped with this bridge, is known as a
"pinch lock" as it has a tension bar that when depressed with the thumb
pinches the strings instead of the traditional allen screws. On the end
of the vibrato arm that fits into the bridge there is a larger allen
wrench. This is used to adjust the bridge height and spring tension when
using it as a floating bridge. The allen screw is located under the
strap button on the back of the body.
The most unfortunate aspect of
these guitars is that within 2-3 years of the design change, Fender
broke partnership with Kahler and moved on with Floyd Rose replacement
parts. As far as design is concerned these guitars are superb. From my
understanding in speaking with custom shop personnel, they were dropped
because they were stealing the market from American Fenders.
About the tremolo
I have never used the tremolo. I currently have it completely locked down inside the body so that it will not move. This can be easily reversed by removing the screw with which I have it locked down and purchasing a replacement tremolo bar (since I lost the original, sorry).
Note about the pickups in the pictures: The pickups shown in the pictures are not being sold with the guitar,
they are Seymour Duncan "Vintage Pearly Gates TB-PG1" pickups with
larger cores with which I replaced the original pickups. These pickups
will be sold separately here on eBay. I will be re-installing the
original stock pickups (saved, but never used)
prior to shipping this guitar to the highest bidder. I did not have
time to do so before the photos were taken. They are black, as well, but
the cores on them are the standard size.
Note about picture of tremolo: Knobs are chrome, not 'pink', that is a reflection of the camera used to take the photos.
You need to buy this guitar! You won't regret it.
